The Connecticut Revenue Finance and Bonding Committee held a public hearing on several bills today including HB 5481, the bill that would require the collection and remittance of sales tax by out of state merchants.
Unfortunately, the severe storm that hit much of the Northeast this weekend, prevented a couple of Affiliates from attending as their home suffered damage. They did however, submit letters to Committee members and and other legislators. A couple of Affiliates were in attendance to testify and others from our industry were there to show support. Other testimony received by the Committee and posted on the Connecticut Legislature website are letters from Amazon, Internet Alliance, Direct Marketing Alliance and Clarus Marketing Group.
Now that the public hearing has concluded the Committee will vote and depending on the outcome it will go back to the General Assembly for vote.
A couple of key factors to note. First the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee is a Joint Committee. Second, this bill is identical to last year’s bill; a lot of the ground work was done last year.
What’s next? The Committee will vote and we be able to plan further. For now Affiliates should continue to email their legislators. Of course, they should also continue to prepare their business model and identify replacement merchants should they be needed.
