Colorado Senate Finance Committee Pushes HB1193 Forward

by Jonathon on February 5, 2010

This post marks my very first post for Affiliate Advocacy, I actually think I am the very first guest author here. Unfortunately, this post does not share good news. Earlier today the Senate Finance Committee approved HB 1193. The Colorado Internet Tax Bill now moves forward, I believe to the Senate Floor. (It is possible that the bill needs to be heard in appropriations for a quick approval as a standard procedure. We’ll be able to confirm that tomorrow.)  There it will go through a Second and Third readings with vote.  The recorded vote  occurs after the third reading; if approved it will move on to the Governor.  Governor Bill Ritter is expected to sign the bill.

Once again several affiliates attended the hearings, some were permitted to speak up. Despite the pleas the bill moves forward. While most affiliates spoke out against the bill a couple were in favor after learning about the amendments that will offer typicalaffiliates and merchants protection. Not being able to read the amendmentsmakes it hard to see the real impact. I am sure Melanie Seery will review everything as soon as she can tomorrow.

I listened to the hearing. I have to admit that just listening was a little difficult. I really missed the video, makes it easier to identify parties speaking.  It was wonderful to hear so many residents, on both sides of the issue, involved in the hearing, it would have been nice to see as well.

The next step for affiliates is to follow up with their Senators. Having worked in politics I suggest that you contact the Senators from your hometown; there is still time to have an impact. Email or call, keeping your message brief and respectful.

I spoke briefly with Melanie Seery a few moments ago. Although there is still some hope that the Governor won’t sign, she urges every affiliate to make sure they have prepared for the law to take effect. As you are aware, some merchants may terminate relationships. She has great information for affiliates as they work to adjust and recover from the impact of the new nexus legislation.

It is indeed a hectic time for the affiliate industry.  Affiliate Advocacy will continue to monitor issues and work through solutions on industry issues.

I am sure Melanie will have a more complete update tomorrow when she returns to work. I hope my next post here has better news.
